What To Expect

Cerdeira is a magical place. At the entrance to the village, a small bridge leads us to a handful of houses peeping through the foliage. It seems like we are crossing the portal to a fantasy world. Everything appears perfect in this deeply romantic setting. The slate path points the way to a spring hidden among lush vegetation.

Between steep slopes rent by watercourses tumbling down from higher up, Cerdeira nestles in the most bucolic of surroundings. This is a village that art and creativity have helped to refound. Indeed, at certain times of the year, the village becomes alive with events that combine art and botany.

Aldeia do Talasnal
Here nature reigns. For a long time now, this is the Schist Village of the Lousã Mountain that has lent most visibility and charm because of the many details of the restoration of its houses. And also by the way the village seduces us through the mouth.

30 minutes • Admission Ticket Free

Aldeia do Casal Novo
Passing along the unpaved road, the presence of Casal Novo almost escapes us. The village lies in a fold on the steeply sloping, north-facing hillside and the woodland surrounding the village hides its outline.

• Admission Ticket Free

Aldeia de Gondramaz
Gondramaz is a completely restored shale village with about 50 houses where there is a tourist resort and where we will have a coffee.

Aldeias do Xisto
Cadaval Cimeiro and Cadaval Fundeiro are two abandoned shale villages that burned twice in the 1980s. There we will hike between the two.

Great trip to a different Portugal.

This was a highlight of our trip to Portugal. Even though it was pouring rain the entire day, we had a great time exploring the villages. Alfredo was a great guide and we enjoyed talking to him about many topics.
Wonderful tour

Highly recommend this tour with Alfredo. He is knowledgeable, flexible, well steeped in the area and history and a good driver! We visited 3 villages on the half day tour, and I had plenty of time to explore them, with time for coffee and the local chestnut liqueur of the region. You should feel comfortable walking up inclines to get the full experience! This is a beautiful and remote part of the world, and Alfredo brings it to life.

Highly recommend. Informative guide, and beautiful scenery. It's a way to get out of the city, and see a different side of the country.
Coimbra - Schist Villages tour (by Green Deer)

Alfredo from Green Deer Tours took us around yesterday. We had a wonderful time! Alfredo explained about the history of the villages and how they have been rebuilt and used today.

He picked us up from Coimbra for a full eight hours and drove all over the mountains during the day's tour. We learnt about each village, saw houses being rebuilt, looked for deer, took pictures on a swing, and ate a delicious lunch.(try the goat stew)

Alfredo was a safe driver and conversation flowed easily in English. We enjoyed learning more about Portugal. We highly recommend him for this tour.
