What To Expect

Fatima
Considered by many to be one of the greatest pilgrimage destinations, the city of Fatima gained greater importance from 1917 with the first appearance of Our Lady of Fatima to the three shepherds, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, in Cova de Iria, where today is the Chapel of Apparitions. The apparitions took place every 13 from May until October 1917, and the latter apparition was witnessed by over 70,000 pilgrims to the so-called sun miracle. In 1928, construction began on the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, one of the most important Marian shrines in the world and composed by the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Rosary Enclosure, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the retreat house of Nossa Senhora do Carmo e Rectory, retreat house of Nossa Senhora das Dores and shelter for the sick, Pius XII square and Paul VI Pastoral Center, and also the vast Basilica of the Holy Trinity, inaugurated on October 13, 2007.

Valinhos Sanctuary
House of the Three Shepherds - It was in the small village of Aljustrel, located about 2 kms from the Fatima sanctuary, that the three seers of Fatima were born - Lucia and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta who shared her herding duties. Very similar in design and simplicity, the single-storey houses that the little shepherds lived in can be visited. The house where the brothers Jacinta and Francisco lived was built in 1888 and is about 200 meters from the house of their cousin Lucia, dating from 1885. Next to the latter is the Aljustrel House Museum, which features implements. agricultural products, kitchen utensils, clothes and furniture showing visitors what the daily life of these highland populations looked like at the beginning of the century.
