The day we spent cycling with Daniel was our best day in Portugal. He quickly assessed we were inexperienced and apprehensive cyclists (and over 65) and changed the route to be the perfect difficulty and length. The restaurant he chose and the

Live Love Ride Douro Valley

This was the 7 Day International Park Tour!
My wife and I found this tour to be amazing, challenging and everything we had hoped for in a Portugal cycling adventure. We found the roads very smooth, extremely light traffic, and breathtaking views. Daily rides were through the Douro estate vineyards and through small,
quaint ,cobble-stoned villages; historic and still inhabited.
Our guide, Daniel was extremely attentive and flexible to our desires and needs always giving us the space and time to enjoy the beautiful countryside at our own pace. (He even allowed us to take a quick side trip into Spain because I really wanted to!)
The accommodations were five star and dinners expertly prepared and presented artistically!
Daniel was wonderful in giving us insights and recommendations daily so we could choose how our free time was spent off the bike… sightseeing touring castles, resting poolside.
Daily rest stops included enjoying espresso in the mornings and wonderful Douro wines to sample at lunch and dinner.
We are ALREADY planning our next

Amazing Experience!

The Douro valley is stunning- a "must visit" while in Portugal. We signed up for road bikes with our tour provider "Live, Love Bike" but we would recommend e-bikes for most travelers. You will enjoy the experience much more because the first hour of the tour goes from the Douro river level up the valley-(400 meters of switch backs for the first climb and about 400 more for the second climb.) My husband, who is an Ironman, enjoyed the road bike-- but he trains a lot. Let's just say our guide was patient with the rest of us-lol!

Once up the valley, the views were stunning; however, farming grapes here is far from a party. The intensely steep slopes have been step-laddered with stone terraces built centuries ago that are now protected by UNESCO. They are painstakingly maintained and make this region so special. We were a couple of weeks early for wine harvest, which would have been fun to experience. They test the grapes for their sugar level and often start harvest in late August or go into September.

At one of our stops in a village called FAVAIOS at the very top of the valley, our guide introduced us to a unique drink of beer mixed with sweet wine produced in the region, which our beer drinking family members enjoyed very much after the hot and dry ride. Best of all, most of us favored the downhill ride. We would recommend bike gloves if you have them to help your hands with the breaks. It was a cloudless day and as we whizzed down the valley we could feel the heat coming off the pavement and were thankful for the cooling breeze.

We missed our lunch appointment in Pinhão because some of us were slower than others so our very patient guide toggled and we ate some authentic Portuguese dishes at a local tavern like octopus salad, an assortment of sliced meats, basket of bread and of course olives. Then, we stopped for a wine and port tasting which was a lot of fun!

We highly recommend a tour of the Douro valley and found that the Portuguese people very kind and welcoming!
