Overview

Only eight places in the world produce volcanic wines. Just think of the romance that surrounds wines grown in soils born of molten earth and ash. Volcanic soils account for only 1 percent of the world’s surface but contribute a much larger percentage of the world’s great vineyards. Volcanic wines have captivated adventurous wine lovers looking to shock their palates with something different.

This is a micro-production wine from the volcanic Azores islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is grown in volcanic basalt at sea level, less than 50m from the Atlantic. This terroir and the blend of varieties imbue this wine with incredible minerality and purity, as well as unmistakable stony flavours, salinity, and a savoury character, minerality and volcanic wines walk hand-in-hand. Volcanic wine regions are home to some of the most intriguing and characterful wines in the world. Azores, the place where the stone became wine.

Fantastic tour!

We had a wonderful time with Victor! He told us a lot about the island and showed us some of the highlights. The wine tasting never came too short and his knowledge about the history of the islands and their relationship with wine was seemingly endless. Since we were lucky with the weather we could enjoy the beautiful vineyards of Biscoitos in full splendor. Besides his passion for wine, Victor is also a big fan of aviation. We stopped at a viewpoint near the military base and Victor gave us an exciting insight about the international and strategic importance of the islands.

Besides historical and current political insights about life on Terceira, Victor also gave us a first impression of the culture of the islanders. Especially the complex meaning of the Holy Spirit chapels and the festivals and customs around the bull races were incredibly fascinating. His wife Helia, who prepared an incredibly rich and delicious meal for us, also told us quite a bit about this. We really enjoyed the time with both of them and unfortunately the time also flew by. In their garden we had another wine tasting of beautiful local volcanic wines and were able to unwind. They said we should feel at home and thanks to them we did.

It was a wonderful start to a wonderful vacation in the Azores.

PS: Thanks to Helia for the great recipe of the Dona Amélia cakes. The cake alone is one of the many highlights of the tour.

Victor was an amazing tour guide! He showed us places that we would've never found ourselves and was so knowledgeable about the history of the islands! He told us so many interesting stories and truly made us feel welcome. The tapas and wine tasting at his house were amazing and it really felt like spending a lovely evening with friends. We can only recommend this tour and will definitely book with him again. Thanks again to Victor and his lovely life for making this day so special!
A Taste and Tour of Terceira

Vitor was such a gracious host! He is very knowledgeable and passionate about wines on the islands. He even tries his hand at wine making and rivals some of the local wineries! My daughter is an air traffic controller on the island and Vitor knew so much about aircraft and the history of Lajes air base.

Vitor was flexible and eager to please. Another company cancelled our volcano tour the day before so Vitor changed our trip a little so he could take us to the volcano. We thought our tour was ending when the best part was revealed. Vitor hosted an elegant wine tasting with his lovely wife Helia and they prepared them most beautiful and delicious array of local foods and snacks. He even cooked some local sausage for us while we feasted!
Impressive wine with great company!

Wow oh wow! This was the highlight of our trip and on the day we arrived in town. We were joined by two other couples who made the tour even more special. Vitor took care of everything, from taking us to multiple landmarks, to tasting local wine and ending up at his place for a fabulous spread of appetizers, wines, and more. It gave us a sense of what we'd like during our stay and what to purchase to bring home. Felt like we spent the afternoon with family and we will treasure this memory forever.
Wonderful Tour!

Vitor was so knowledgeable and entertaining as he shared stories of vineyards, wines and history. The visit to his home for wine tasting and exquisite hors d'oeuvres made this a wonderful and memorable experience
